What Families Ask

Girls Travel FAQ

How are teams selected?
Teams are selected through open tryouts. Evaluators consider position, skill, athleticism, effort, attitude, and team-composition needs. Athletes should attend all tryout dates for their age group.
How should we choose which levels to select during registration?
Consider the tournament schedule, practice schedule, financial commitment, competition level, and family availability. Players are evaluated only for the levels selected during registration.
What is NIVA's playing-time philosophy?
Playing time is not guaranteed on travel teams. Families are paying for instruction, practice, development, and the opportunity to earn playing time. Coaches make decisions based on production, work ethic, attendance, attitude, and team needs.
Can athletes participate in another sport or activity?
NIVA supports well-rounded athletes. Players should communicate conflicts early, attend as much as possible, and remain committed to team responsibilities throughout the season.
What happens after tryouts?
Every athlete receives an email letting them know their tryout evaluation scores and results. Players rostered on travel teams will receive information on next steps, including acceptance and deposit instructions. Players who are not rostered on a travel team will receive information on our rec program, where every player is rostered. Tryout money will follow the player to the rec division.
What should families expect at tournaments?
Many travel tournaments are two-day events with pool play on Saturdays—typically six-hour blocks where teams play, referee, and sit—and bracket play on Sunday. Tournament schedules are commonly released during the week of the event. Families are responsible for personal travel and lodging, while NIVA communicates any required hotel blocks or stay-to-play information.
What additional services do travel players receive at NIVA?
All teams receive lead coach training, club positional training, a video streaming page, and mental health training. Elite and Regional teams receive SportsEngine Play, while Select and National teams receive Hudl + Balltime. 15–18U National, Select, and Elite teams receive SportsRecruits and recruiting support.
What do fees cover?
Coach and player AAU and JVA insurance; coach USAV insurance; court time; equipment; coach fees; coach travel; tournament entry fees; video and statistical tools; mental health coaches; and recruiting services for 15–18U athletes.
What expenses are not included in team fees?
Uniform package ($360–$390); player USAV memberships for 15–18 National teams and 17 Select teams only; parking at select tournaments; and personal travel and lodging.
Does NIVA offer fundraising?
Yes. NIVA offers optional fundraising opportunities to help families offset season costs. View fees and fundraising information.
